Remember, at this stage of history, America is really 3 different countries. The south is a rigid class society, with former plantation owners still at the top, and people of color still at the bottom. The north isn't innocent of racism, but it's also a more industrial society of larger cities with large neighborhoods of immigrants from all over Europe.
The west is... the land of opportunity? A place where a person can become who he wants ,as long as he doesn't mean living off hte land. Or she, for that matter, as rights for women are more just by 21st century standards compared to the east. The first states to allow women to vote are here. There's a few European immigrants, some Asian immigrants, and several 3-4th or higher generation Americans moving here... and of course, there's the Natives, who you may recall have been pushed furhter west, further again later, the story of the relationship between the American government and the American Indian is one of broken promise after broken promise.
